Well....yesterday I tried to register for the US Surf City and it was SOLD OUT! I was very bummed out that I waited to register but in all honesty I didn't think a Marathon would sell out. But lesson learned! Long story short I looked up other Marathons around the time of Surf City and decided the next best thing to conquer would be LA Marathon!!!!
Since I did learn a lesson from not registering on time. I registered for the LA Marathon today!!!! Here is proof! Now that it is done there is no turning back and no excuses! I feel I am physically ready minus the knee pains but I know I can do it and I will do it! LA I'm ready for you!!!!
Tracking my journey to complete my first marathon LA Marathon 2012! As a way to look back upon the journey and maybe even inspire someone....

XMas Run
Well after the last "run from hell" I wasn't scheduled to run on Christmas weekend. So while visiting the family and the holiday I ate and drank more than I wanted and that = weight gain! The drive back wore me out so I didn't go to bootcamp on Monday (good thing I chose not to go since my trainer overslept). But I still wanted to get a run in. I went for a run didn't exactly have mileage in mind. Just wanted a nice run. My run turned to be 10miles. I didn't feel much knee pain I just felt my knee was tight and hamstrings. The day was very nice and warm so I was very very dehydrated and very glad when I reached my destination (home). Once I actually stopped running the knee pain really began. I got home and did the usual....stretch and ice. Well now 2 days later my knee's feel good! Overall pace slower than what I have been doing but happy with minimal pain!

2 Halfs in 1 Day
I was dreading Saturday since my trainer told me I needed to run 2 half marathon's in 1 day. I actually wanted the week to go slow so Saturday would not get here....But after Friday comes Saturday and Saturday was here!
I prepared myself since Thursday I don't eat many carbs, but on Thursday I did enjoy some Pasta and Bread for dinner and oooooh some bread pudding for dessert! (regular not whole wheat) and Friday I had my usual oatmeal for snack and and a light lunch and for dinner more carbs....
Woke up Saturday had some leftover bread pudding with almond butter, got ready, had an allergy pill and was on my way. I went up to the top level of the parking structure to warm up and stretch before the run journey began. The weather wasn't the best although it was a little sunny it was windy
I started running, but really had no idea where I was going I just ran I had run through where I had planned to go and I now that route would be 8 miles but I need to explore more to make it the 13.1 miles. It wasn't my best run as far and time and the wind I'm not a fan of. But I guess I could deal with it after all I have no idea on what the weather will actually be like until the day of.
1st Half
I started off and went slower pace that usual not sure if it was the wind that had me going slower or just my body. I went from Irvine to Santa Ana to Irvine and around and was very dehydrated I had to stop at a Del Taco and ask fro water. I did get a funny look from the cashier but she gave me water and that held me off til I got home. There was even a nice old man at the bus stop who clapped and gave me a high 5. Felt good to get that from a stranger and that pushed me a little more to run a little faster. I completed the first half with NO knee pain but did have pain in my hamstrings and butt! I felt my hamstrings get tight at about mile 3 then, the rest after (booty). I completed with pace of 10:50 min/mi not what I wanted, but then again my knee did not bother me so if it means for me to slow my pace and not have knee pain then I'll take it. I would still complete the full under my goal if I stay under 11min
Break
Once my cool down and stretching was done. I had to eat and drink water. I felt sooooo dehydrated not sure if it was the energy gel that I used (Cliff Shot chocolate flavor tastes like chocolate frosting that's what I'm loving right now) or the fact that I had to take an allergy pill. Maybe it was a combo of both. I made myself breakfast/snack and iced. Showered and had to get ready to meet some friends for a lunch. The lunch was hard! I noticed I got a blister from running and any shoe I wore hurt!!! Also lunch was at Lucielles Smokehouse BBQ and I did not want to be "that person" ordering a salad at a Smokehouse. But the thought of heartburn on the 2nd half and my stomach going crazy or puking made me be "that person" I did enjoy some biscuits and a salad with not much dressing. And then I could see the rain come. I didn't want to hurry the lunch, but I just kept looking at the clock and out the window. I really did not want to run in the rain or the treadmill......
2nd Half
Got home from lunch and got ready right away. The rain had stopped it was clear it smelled crisp so I figured I better hurry and get started. I got ready once again (hoping that blister would not bother me) and stretched longer than I did on the first half. Again I had no idea where I was going I just went. This time as soon as I started I could I was going to have knee pains. I hated getting red lights it seemed like after every long light I would get knee pain. I didn't just stand at the lights either I made sure to keep moving and pacing back and fourth for the light to turn green. But that didn't help I was about half way done when I really felt it. I almost cried and all I think of is OMG I don't have my phone I'm in residential area I just felt a raindrop. I have no way to call Norris to pick me up. The good thing is after about 30 seconds of starting to run again the pain would numb again I just kept saying please God just let me finish this and let me hurt when I get home. Well I did complete it and there was no rain, the crisp air felt good! My pace again, not the best but I was able to complete 10:48 min/mi. I found it strange that it was a second faster because I felt myself in more pain that the first half.
DONE: Recovery
I must of had a look on my face when I got home that I wanted to die. Once I actually stopped and got home MY EVERYTHING HURT!!! I get home and first thing Norris says "hey skinny! are you ok"my answer "um uh no my everything hurts, my butt, hamstrings, quads, legs, calves, knees, feet. everything!" I stretch drink water because again I feel very dehydrated and take a hot bath with epsom salt. I did want to have a glass of wine in the tub but had to opt out for a bottle of water. After the bath it was more stretching and icing oh and I can't forget dinner! To my surprise on Sunday I woke up just feeling sore but not hurting like I was on Saturday. I actually got to sleep in and felt okay I made sure I continued to ice. Yesterday I went to bootcamp even though I would of much rather have slept in another 2hours but I need to go and get some good stretching. Today I feel good! I feel very good! My legs don't hurt and neither do my knees. All I feel is my legs a little tight but I like that feeling.
All in all I wasn't happy with the time, but am very happy with being able to do it and the way my body recovered so quick from it! Now I know I am able to run a FULL MARATHON in a day, but I need to be able to do it all at once. I'm getting nervous there isn't much time left and I'm scared I wont be able to do it come the day. I don't want to disappoint anyone that has been with me through this journey but most of all I don't want to disappoint myself.....

40 Laps
I've been slacking again on my blogging....but here is a short recap on my run before last 12.10.11
40 Laps on the Track. I went to OCC since they have the softest track. I ran on Lane 1 and 10:27 min/mi not so bad. I did get knee pain the last mile. 40 Laps was not 10 miles on the track it was 10.25 miles either way I completed, knee pain and all. But nothing icing couldn't fix after the run.

Hills
Saturday wasn't a very nice day to run outside. The Santa Ana winds were crazy so that meant so were my allergies. But I had to get my running in.
The workout was to run up Chapman in Orange (a nice steep hill). I thought it was 8mile run so that would be 4 up and 4 down. I did my warm up and got started. My avg pace the whole way up hill was 10:37 (that's what my pace was last week when I did 16) I felt I was running much harder since the winds were pushing towards me. Half way up the hill my knee started to bother me and it continued to bother me til i got up to where i need to go. It wasn't as painful as last week but enough for it to bother me. Once I got up the hill I had to turn back around that was distance of 4.5miles. The down hill at first was fun my avg pace was a whole minute faster 9:37 (wish I could keep this pace) and about half way down the butt and hamstrings feel the burn LOL my total distance was 9miles and avg pace was 10:27min/m not too bad considering half was uphill and I worked out all week sore from my last run.
With my knee hurting a bit and my butt and hamstrings feeling very tight. I had to do what I didn't want to do.....ICE BATH! OMG those were the longest 8min of my life!!! My toes turned purple tears rolled down my eyes, but needless to say it worked! Didn't feel too much pain after that. I did ice my knee all weekend and stretched. So I'm looking forward to this Saturday (hopefully no knee pains)

Catching Up
I haven't really blogged in a bout a week, but I have continued training.
So to sum it all up:
Friday last week (11-25-11) I did Intervals on Treadmill incline 5
7mph @ 5 incline: run 30 seconds, get off and rest 10 seconds, repeat until you complete 10 total runs of 30 seconds.
3-5 minute rest
4 times
1 mile cool-down speed 6.5
Saturday last week (11-26-11)
I went long 16miles. I did start feeling a little pain at around mile 8 by the time i got to mile 13 my knee was killing me (ITB) but I pushed through it and finished. My avg pace was 10:37min/mi

Ma libu Spartan Race
This past Saturday was the Malibu Spartan Race! I signed up to run it with a few friends so we formed a team. Death, Destruction, Mayhem AND BEER!
I took the Race as my "running workout" It was only a 5k but I figured it would do as a workout since it had obstacles. I had no idea what I signed up for! It was very hard to "run" the whole thing. I want to say 80% of it was all incline and the other 20% was a steep down hill. In addition to the obstacles in between. There was hills, monkey bars, cargo rope, walls, lakes with freezing water up to your neck, buckets of cement, barbwire, rocks, water, mud, sand, gravel. fire anything "Spartan" you can think of. I may be exaggerating a bit but see for yourself http://www.spartanrace.com/. Oh and for any obstacle you did not complete you had to drop and do 30 burpies. I think I would of much rather just do the burpies would have been more less painful.
Well after huffing and puffing the outcome wasn't so bad although I did expect to do better than I actually did. I placed 68 in my age group, 326 for all women and 1724 overall my time was 01:10:53.1 so I guess it wasn't so bad. I do have plenty of ugly battle wounds but the sense of accomplishment takes the pain from the bruises and the cuts! I will admit that during the race I did think on how in the hell I planned on running 26 miles when I was struggling to do 3. But I guess we just have to wait and see on Feb 5, 2012!

Intervals Running Workout
Saturday's Running Workout sounded scary just like everyone other workout I have. This was going to be a test of Mind over Matter.....
Intervals of 20 Runs of 90seconds @ 5% incline 6-7speed with recovery time as much needed to complete it.
I woke up made myself an Almond Butter on a Whole Wheat Bagel Thin for breakfast. I knew I would need the fuel the Gu would not be enough for this workout. I let me food settle about a good hour maybe hour and a half. Had 1 pack of Gu and got some Gu packs and water bottles ready to go.
Started with a good warmup/stretching the usual....some runs squats, lunges, side, lunges then and think on how I will conquer and survive this workout. I think the best plan is to divided the runs in sets of 5 and change it 1 by 1 if need be. I head down to the gym to hop on the treadmill.
Run: 1-5 I set the speed at 7 that would average a 8:34min/mi and rest of 30 seconds between each run. The first 3 runs weren't so bad, but after that i struggled a little but I finished. Again.....i'm NOT a fan of INCLINE on the treadmill I consider anything INCLINE as "KILLER"
Run: 6-10 I kept the speed the same since I felt the speed wasn't so bad I just needed a little more time to recover than 30 seconds so I increased it by 15 and had 2 chews during the runs. The 45 second recover time did help but I noticed on I was really struggling with the last 3 runs and it wasn't so much the recovery it was more the speed so as I was run I was planning on how I would tackle the next 5 runs. I figured if I think of anything other than how hard it is the time will go by much faster.
Run: 11-15 Since I felt the speed was to fast in that last set I drop it down to 6.5 that will give me an average of 9:13min/mi at this point I have some more Chews but I'm feeling much better. I'm not struggling like I was previously. I feel the pace is good and the recovery time is enough even though it is 30 seconds. That is until.....run #15 comes along I feel my legs getting a little tight not so much tired but tight. Buy hey there it's the last run at this speed. I'll take more recovery for my next set.
Run: 16-20 I rest a good 2 minutes before I start on the last set of runs so I'm feeling not so bad at this point and I increase the speed back to 7 since it's the last set I better push myself and the recovery we'll so how I finish run 16. The energy from the Chews is starting to kick in so I get 16 done and rest but 30 seconds pass and so do 45 and I finally feel recovered at 52 seconds so I just make it 1 minute recover. Those last 5 runs were the tough even with 1 minute recover between each run but I think the 2nd set Run 6-10 was harder! I finish and as Keinan as you don't just take the keys out of the ignition you slow down then stop and take them out.
Cool Down: I'm feeling good now that I caught my breath once I completed all 20 runs I took a 1 minute rest to catch my breath and dropped the incline to 0 and kept speed 7. I didn't have a specific time or distance (plus the alabama vs penn state game was good by now) so I just ran. My cool down was a good 2 miles running at speed 7 then I dropped the speed to 4 and walked .5 to finish my cool down. To my surprise I felt really good I was not exhausted. I finished walking stretched did some abs and had energy left. To clean up and cook for Pre-Thanksgiving dinner! So yes, I did conquer and survived with energy left inside me!!!!

2 1 2 Running Workout
I'm a little late on this blog but it has been hectic and exhausting (life and work)
-My Yoga workout didn't happen while on vacation due to the class being cancelled
-No running workout last weekend....due to going out of town for my nephews batptism
My schedule changed slightly at work. I have a meeting every other Tuesday at 7:45am so those days I need to leave bootcamp early. Well, now with the time change the meeting got changed to 7am which means I need to be in work before 7am and that leaves no time for bootcamp. With that being said every other Tuesday will be a running workout.
2 1 2 Running Workout
2 Miles outside
1 Mile treadmill 10% (incline)
2 Miles outside
The workout didn't sound so bad at first but the incline kills me with my asthma or maybe I need to learn to breath better. Plus I would finally get to run in my new shoes!!! So here is the progress report:
1 Gu Vanilla Bean flavor warm up and stretching about 7min some jogging, squats, lunges
Mile 1- 9:00 I was feeling good very excited to try out the new shoes, there was no wind going against me or cars coming towards me. I had an idea where a mile would be then I would run back since I had to get on the treadmill so I followed the GPS on my phone
Mile 2- 9:16 It was easier than I thought considering the cars were coming at me so there was a little wind blowing but all in all it wasn't so bad although that mile seemed a little long.
Mile 3 (Treadmill Incline 10 speed 4.5) Well I thought I sucked at it my chest was hurting I started to get a headache. I couldn't breath right but I did run faster to get inside since I had no water and was thirsty. Then I finally notice that they were painting the hall way next to the gym (explains why I had a headache) but I pushed through it, I wish I could of done it non-stop but didn't. I'm not exact on the time of the mile
Mile 4- 10:20 This was my slowest mile I really felt like I was walking not running. All I could think of his how I hate running incline. It felt nice though I decided to go around the block this time and it was a little darker but less noisy from all the cars. To my surprise it was quiet even with all the protesters from Occupy on one of the corners.
Mile 5- 9:42 I finally feel like I caught my breath and got "rest" from that "KILLER" mile on the treadmill. I wasn't so much out of breath as I was on Mile 3 it did feel much better than Mile 4 though. I finished the mile then walked home as my cool down.
Cool Down: Walked up 6 flight of stairs to the rooftop of the parking structure and continued cool down and of course can't forget the stretching (a must) even did a few abs. for about 15 minutes All in all other than Mile 3 i feel I had a good run.
My speed improved. From the miles ran outside my pace was 9:35min/mi
P.S. I absolutely love my new shoes!!!! I think the people over at Road Runners did a great job fitting me!

Compex on a Friday
Yesterday I woke up with so much pain. I have no idea why or how?!?! The alarm went off and it was time to get up @ 5am for bootcamp. I had pain from the top of my spine all the way down to my waist. But it wasn't the sore muscle pain, if i touched my back it was pain. All day yesterday I was hurting and at work didn't lean all the way back on my chair because of it. I got home and as Norris hugged me it hurt like a had a bruise going all the way down my back. So I said "ouchhhhhhh" he lifted up my shirt and noticed that at my waist was a big bruise and it was swollen. So....ice pack time! I didn't hit myself anywhere so I really had no idea where it came from.
Today I still got up and went to bootcamp, because of the pain, bruising, and swelling I'm limited to what I can do. So Keinan put the Compex on me to loosen up my back. He thinks the bruising might of been caused from my back being tight and running incline on the treadmill. Either way we don't know exactly what caused it I just need to make sure to take care of it and myself to prevent more injury.
I'm hoping to be back to normal by Monday. I'm on vacation and plan on going to a Yoga class tomorrow that is offered at the Resort we are staying at. I'll be going to my mom's next weekend and won't be able to do a running workout so I need to be ready for a full week of working out Monday (that is if I'm better)!

10-20-30
Saturday's running workout was a 10-20-30 on the treadmill. I got up got ready had 1 GU Energy Gel pack, took some GU Chomps (haven't had the chomps before), water, ipod and headed downstairs to the gym. I made sure to warm up and stretch before jumping on the treadmill. Don't want to make the same mistake as last time and think me running is the warm up and end up with knee and back pains.
10min (incline 10) it seemed like the longest 10 minutes of my life ever!!! I wont pretend like it was easy because it wasn't those 10 minutes killed me! I think my pace was 4.5 or 4.7 not sure, I was huffing and puffing (note to self: make sure to always have inhaler) I have asthma and I usually don't feel it much when I run flat but boy did this incline have me struggle.
20min (incline 5) dropping incline helped but i still felt out of breath I think my pace here was maybe 5 or 5.2 about 10 min into the 20 i had 2 of the Chomps and didn't feel it do much to me. But I wasn't feeling my legs being tired I mainly felt my chest being tired.
30min (incline 0) pop in 2 more Chomps ooooooooooooh yea! Now I'm running flat I feel the 2 Chomps from before kick in I'm feeling good I'm running at 6. My chest isn't hurting I'm not huffing or puffing! Now this is what I like here...running flat no incline although I much rather be running outside than on this treadmill. But I really am feeling my self and boost up the speed to 6.5 and there is 15 seconds left before I'm done and I'm trying to see the actual distance I accidentally hit STOP so I'm going to guess and say it was about 5.75 not so bad considering half of the time was at incline.
Snap kicks and a slow mile jog to cool down. The snap kicks didn't feel so good. I thought my legs were good until I got off the treadmill, then they kind of shook and the snap kicks...let's say I felt my legs were really going to "snap" The mile cool down I probably could of just power walked it the slow pace felt like I was walking.
My total workout was 1:27 with the warm up and cool down oh and can't forget the stretching before and after (a must). I wasn't as hungry as I was last week with my running workout outdoors, but I did feel as dehydrated. I did notice on the treadmill my feet slide to the front in my shoes so my toe hits the front of the shoe (again from previous posts I'm not wearing the right shoes) and I run much slower on the treadmill than I do outdoors. Or that's the way it feels. From the Energy Gel packs as of right now I think I like Cliff better over the GU but I'm going to try others and give them all a 2nd try before I decide on what I will have on the marathon.

A Day at Bootcamp
This is a video of what a day a bootcamp looks like! Everyday at bootcamp is different and a challenge, but i love it! Bootcamp is helping me train for the marathon and gives me the strength and stamina I need for my long runs and running workouts. I noticed that my stride is much better and recovery time from runs than it was before I started bootcamp and just did running on my own.

Running Workout 2
On Friday I told Keinan I'm getting out and running this weekend. I was thinking he was going to say "good" but I got "you need to shock your body" I thought "shock my body in other words I'm gonna die" Shocking my body consisted of running 4 miles doing 50 jump squats, 50 pushups, 50 lunges x3 then do another 4 miles. Oh yeah I thought I'm gonna die, but I'm going to do die trying.
I prepared myself had some gel packs ready to go and got up at 5:45am and got out the door by 6:20 or so
Mile 1- 9:47 it was the beginning there was no sun out yet I was feeling good very good
Mile 2- 10:26 slowed down a bit but all and all I thought the pace was good maybe I could of gone faster but the thought of I still need to do that workout in between I might be beat by the time 4 miles get here
Mile 3- 10:27 pace is still good there's a few car's out not so many red light but all in all I'm feeling good
Mile 4- 10:33 I stopped at the 7 eleven since they had grass and I wasn't trying to do jump squats on the sidewalk. Oh god how am I going to do this?!? I'm not completely beat but the thought I hate lunges!!! Ugh 150 good God help me! Round 1 is completed not so bad I have some water and my 2nd pack of gel. Round 2 ok I feel my legs are burning at this point it feels like the lunges are my recovery. More people are out driving, I get crazy looks from everyone they are probably thinking (WTF is that girl doing if I did not have to be out right now I would be in bed) . Round 3 at about 15 jump squats I feel like my legs are gonna fall they are buuuuuurning OMG I just want to be over not because I'm tired but because I feel the burn. Ok done now on to the next....
Mile 5- 10:32 pace is good considering all that I just did after Mile 4 my legs feel tight but not so bad and then....I feel pain on my left knee
Mile 6- 10:59 my knee is hurting and I pray every light I hit is red so i can get to stop and stretch, with my pain I continue it's not like I can't walk but it is slowing me down
Mile 7- 10:34 I need to change the music I have the ipod set to shuffle but I keep getting R.Kelly I don't exactly want to listen to R.Kelly when all I can think of is getting to the finish. I need something more up beat so changed the ipod to another play list and it give me a good pace. All I keep thinking is what am I going to eat when I get home?!?!
Mile 8- 10:34 I just go hard I can't wait to get home stretch, ice, shower, and eat!
All and all my average mile was 10:27 it took me just as long to do the whole run and workout as it did when I did just the run it self 1hr 36min. I got home had a protein shake and iced right after my shower. My knee was in so much pain I iced probably 6 times that day and I could not believe how hungry I was. I ate all day...really all day! It was pretty healthy eating and drank water like there was no tomorrow. After dinner went to the jacuzzi got back and iced some more I woke up on Sunday and no more knee pain, but the quads sure did feel nice and tight!
The workout didn't kill me like I thought it would I was able to get it done I just feel I could of done better, maybe if I didn't have knee pain . I had so much energy all day though. that I could not believe I thought I would of been up on the couch all day, but I was up running around cleaning, running errands I didn't want to just sit I had energy! Yessssssssssss I SURVIVED!
I'm ready for next wknd.....

Running Workout 1
September 24th, 2011 was a gloomy morning so I decided it's really time to get the ball rolling I won't be able to do this with just bootcamp. Plus nothing like getting out and running like there isn't a care in the world. Oooooh and I was very excited to take my new ipod (got for my bday from my boyfriend) on the journey!
I decided to run outside since the weather wasn't too hot or too cold and was overcast at about 10am. I got a lot of red lights so it took me longer than I wanted then my right foot started hurting but I kept it moving. I didn't know exactly the distance I was running I just figured it would be more than the times I have ran outside and other than my foot hurting it wasn't so bad or I didn't think it was then.
Once I was done I checked the time and it took me 1hr and 32min to complete I went back in my car to track the distance it was 8miles. I was a little disappointed I feel I could of done better, but it wasn't so bad. But oh then...my legs were so sore!!! OMG the next day my whole body was sore I thought I recovered quick from the run but my body was hurting. Maybe it was my body being tired from all the social events that I had in the past since that meant my diet wasn't the best when I had a social event that was every weeknd so there was food and alcohol....
Oh and let's not forget the blisters I got! Lesson learned NIKE FREE's are NOT I repeat NOT long distance running shoes!!!

Why and How I started this Journey
I find running therapeutic and relaxing....I completed my first half marathon back in January of 2009 and the rush and satisfaction of completing something I trained hard for and set my mind to was unbelievable. I thought maybe I can one day do a Marathon but the thought of wow can i really run for 26 miles?!?!
As 2010 ended I started thinking and reflecting on my life and the "I'm going to be 30 in 2011" I have my own bucket list and completing a full marathon at the age of 30 was at the top of the list along with getting back in shape and not looking 30!
In January I did a 5K leading a blind runner and that just inspired me more and gave me a new look and perspective of life....I thought to myself "wow here is a blind person knowing he will not see ever again happy and care free with a bucket list of his own" that was a turning point in my life as a more positive person and happy. He convinced me to do a Blind Mud Run (10K blind folded) for June 2011. I recruited a couple of people and we had a team!
Once I was committed I knew I could not back down and although I can run a good 9 miles out of shape I did not want to be out of shape for this. I started running on the weekends outside and a few days during the week when I wasn't stuck working late and what happened?? My knees started hurting so I was out for about a week. I decided to call on my good friend and personal trainer (he trained me previously) Keinan Briggs www.coachk.webs.com. I started doing workouts and I was good. He decided to start up a bootcamp in April and it began from there. He knows my ability, I had a Marathon in mind so he gave me the confidence in telling me it was possible and I was capable. He would help me get to crossing the Marathon off my bucket list. I do bootcamp M-F from 5:30am to 6:30am.
The rest if history and forward to NOW!
Marathon goal: Feb 5, 2012 Surf City
